Lana Del Rey’s new single release, ‘West Coast’
Although not a keen Lana Del Rey fan, her new single, ‘West Coast’, from upcoming album Ultraviolence does shine with her dark, trademark creativity.
This new release has all the vibes and synth effects of an early ’90s mood tune with a chorus that harkens back to All Saint’s ‘Pure Shores, just with Lana’s breathy melancholy as she groans, “Move baby, move baby, I’m in love”.
The chorus and verses contrast in rhythm and rhyme, which demonstrates that ‘West Coast’ is a track of two souls: Californian flange with a windswept soul cruising arm-in-arm with dark introspection.
In collaboration with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, it’s difficult to tell if ‘West Coast’ is indicative of the rest of the album to come. But if it is, we should all expect something sultrier, duskier and, hopefully, a lot more edgy.
